Johnny Eager is a little known film but well worth catching.

I don't think Van Heflin's character is bordering I think its as explicit as they dared given the censorship of the time.
I mean, he cradles Taylor in his arms and sobs! Its a lovely job of acting.

If you like Van Heflin also check out 'Presenting Lily Mars' a Judy Garland vehicle but Heflin is funny in it as her leading man.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12103364841737548798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8443179676076724.post-27332386969812435932007-09-21T17:24:00.000-05:002007-09-21T17:24:00.000-05:00Joe,Thanks for the kind words. My reality has always been more GHOST WORLD rather than ANIMAL HOUSE.

The source of my interest in alky-centric cinema can be summed up with the words "W.C. Fields" and "Dean Martin."

Cheers,
garvgarvhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11554635572232453299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8443179676076724.post-10896550638868871122007-09-21T03:55:00.000-05:002007-09-21T03:55:00.000-05:00Awesome review, Garv. Booze plays only a minor role.

I have never seen a movie with Van Heflin in it, but James Mangold was singing his praises during all the press for the remake of 3:10 To Yuma. Good call, I need to check some of these Golden Age movies out.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8443179676076724.post-17417584221808755182007-09-17T21:47:00.000-05:002007-09-17T21:47:00.000-05:00Heflin was also great in another favorite of mine,...Heflin was also great in another favorite of mine, GRAND CENTRAL MURDER, also from 1942. TCM screens it from time to time, and it's a great little who-done-it time waster. It's packed with fun character performances, it features a couple of the loveliest females of the Forties--Patricia Dane and Virginia Grey, and Heflin makes a great private dick. It's a shame he didn't portray more detectives or spin GRAND CENTRAL MURDER into a series.garvhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11554635572232453299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8443179676076724.post-89021835730325840942007-09-17T13:52:00.000-05:002007-09-17T13:52:00.000-05:00I think this was Heflin's screen debut, too.
